Since its beginning in 1991, the Prostate Cancer Family Support Group has had over 5,000 attendees. Several men have become regular members and others attend meetings as they feel the need. Each month we welcome several new faces. Wives and close friends are welcome as the fight against cancer takes a group effort, and all involved need to learn about it. Meetings are free and no reservations are required. There is no requirement to use a particular facility or physician; we only want to give you more information so that as you battle prostate cancer, you can make wise decisions and know that you're in the company of many others who will support you all the way.
Prostate Cancer Family Support Group meetings have a variety of formats: sometimes a specialist will speak to the group about a particular treatment. Other months we have a question and answer session with several doctors in different areas, or just a time for patients to ask each other questions about their treatment options and experiences. Whatever is going on, though, you're sure to learn something new or be put in touch with someone who can help answer your questions.
Ralph A. Highshaw, M.D. serves as the Medical Education Director and advisor for the group. Dr. Highshaw specializes in Urology and Urological Oncology in Riverside and Corona.
The Prostate Cancer Family Support Group is a program offered free of charge by Riverside Medical Clinic Foundation. This group is affiliated with many organizations which address prostate cancer issues, such as the American Cancer Society, PAACT, US-TOO, American Urologic Association Foundation, and IMPACT. If you have a specific need, we can help put you in touch with the right organization.
Meetings are held on the second Thursday evening of every month except August and December. Locations and times sometimes vary, so please call Riverside Medical Clinic Foundation to confirm details for a specific meeting. Doors always open early and attendees are encouraged to network, share experiences, and browse through books, brochures, and other informational materials.
